LAURA STEIN,
Founder & Principal
Having lived and trained in both Boston and Toronto, Laura brings a unique breadth of knowledge and experience to every project. Growing up in Toronto, Laura was always the creative kid in her class. At a young age she learned how to oil paint, built her own darkroom in her parents’ basement, and managed to turn just about everything into an art project. She always knew one day her career would be in a creative industry, but interior design wasn’t on her early radar. Laura attended McGill University and earned a degree in English/Film & Communications, and then moved to Boston to pursue a Masters degree in Marketing Communications.
Laura worked in Boston for several years as an art director and graphic designer, but found the design work she was doing was literally flat - either on a screen or a piece of paper. She realized she wanted to create designs that were tactile and textural, that people could interact with, move through, even sit on. And she wanted to use design in a way that would positively impact people’s lives. It was then that Laura realized interior design was her calling. So, back to school she went. In 2006, Laura returned to Toronto and opened her eponymous firm. Her founding belief that being surrounded by beauty can truly change people’s experience of life is still a guiding principle at LSI today.
Laura has a love of travel and finds continuous inspiration in art, design and architecture from around the world. Her work is also inspired by her appreciation of nature, something that was instilled in her from summers spent in Muskoka and Algonquin Park, and winters skiing in the mountains. Laura is happiest exploring the busy streets of a foreign city, or floating in a canoe on a tranquil lake.
Laura lives in Toronto’s west end with her husband, son, and Bernedoodle, Lilly. For the past 3 years she has been learning to play guitar with hopes of fulfilling her secret dream of becoming a rock star sometime before she turns 80.
