“WE SHAPE OUR DWELLINGS, AND AFTERWARDS,
OUR DWELLINGS SHAPE US”

- Winston Churchill

Wellness in interior design is about more than scented candles or an in-home yoga studio. It’s about creating environments that support and promote physical, mental and emotional well-being. In fact, there is more and more research that supports the connection between the built environment and human productivity, creativity, stress-levels, sleep, mood, cognitive function, and overall feelings of fulfilment and well-being. Our team at LSI realized that if we could create positive outcomes in these areas through our design work, then it was something we had to do. It just makes sense. After all, exceptional, effortless living cannot exist without it.

DESIGNING FOR WELLNESS

Biophilic Design

BIOPHILIC DESIGN

The term biophilic literally means love of nature. Humans, after all, are creatures of nature themselves, and for most of our existence we have lived in and with nature. Relative to human history, buildings are a rather new invention. Unfortunately, the more buildings we humans have created over time, the more disconnected we have become with the natural environment. Biophilic design aims to turn that around. There is plenty of science that documents the healing effects of nature. It fulfills our souls in a way that is as real as it is poetic. It’s why we flock to the lake on weekends and plan our vacations by the ocean or in the mountains. Simply put, we need nature to be whole and well.

Biophilic design connects our built environment with our natural one by integrating natural elements and materials such as natural light, plants, wood, and stone. It emphasizes the use of organic shapes and patterns, and stresses the importance of place and culture. It considers views and vistas, colours, sunlight, air and water, all to create a cohesive multi-sensory experience. Done thoughtfully, biophilic design can improve overall health outcomes, reduce stress, increase cognitive performance, creativity, productivity, and concentration, as well as improve overall mood, attitude, happiness, and sense of well-being. And of course, tied in with biophilic design is attention to sustainability and the preservation of our environment.

Lighting Design, Circadian Lighting

LIGHTING

Lighting design can have a profound impact on the overall experience of an indoor environment. Implementing indoor lighting strategies that mimic natural light cycles can help to regulate circadian rhythms and improve sleep patterns, resulting in better energy, mood and productivity. The right lighting can also reduce eye strain and headaches, and it can create an ambiance that enhances pleasure, like romantic lighting for dining.

Functional design, effortless living

FUNCTIONALITY

A well-designed home requires an efficient layout and spaces that function to support the activities and needs of the people living in it. This promotes ease of living and productivity, and reduces stress and frustration.

Beauty and Art

BEAUTY & ART

Being surrounded by beauty makes people happy. Whether it’s gorgeous materials, soothing colours, or rich textures, beauty brings joy. Using highly textural, soft, natural fabrics on furniture can create both a lux and comfortable environment, a sense of calm and relaxation. Impactful art also plays a large role. Having something beautiful, inspiring and thought-provoking to look at helps with centering and focus, cognitive function, and can have a calming influence.

“The American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine says making or even just seeing art can impact the brain. Art can help:
Increase serotonin level
• Increase blood flow to the part of the brain associated with pleasure
• Foster new ways of thinking
• Imagine a more hopeful future”

Acoustic design and comfort

ACOUSTIC COMFORT

There are some sounds we want to hear, and others we don’t. With proper sound attenuation we can reduce the levels of distracting, and irritating noises, making way for more pleasurable, calming sounds like music and conversation.

Air quality, Low VOCs, ventilation

AIR QUALITY

While ventilation and filtration systems fall under the scope of our builder partners, we help with air quality by selecting non-toxic materials with low or no VOCs.

STATS
